Gibberellic acid (GA₃) is a plant growth regulator commonly used to influence cell elongation, shoot development, seed dormancy, and germination. Because GA₃ is highly active at very low concentrations, precise preparation and dosing are important for repeatable results.

Boca Hydro GA₃ contains 90% active ingredient and is designed for preparing accurately measured stock solutions for tissue culture media, seed treatments, laboratory applications, nursery propagation, and other precision plant-growth programs.

GA₃ has limited direct solubility in water. For best results, the measured powder should first be dissolved in a small amount of 95% ethanol or an appropriate dilute NaOH solution, then brought to final volume with distilled or deionized water.

GA₃ 90% Tissue Culture & Mixing Guide

GA₃ is normally used at very low concentrations in plant tissue culture. Appropriate concentration varies considerably by plant species, developmental stage, and the purpose of the culture.

Typical tissue culture concentrations are approximately 0.1–5 mg/L active GA₃. Lower concentrations are commonly used when modest elongation is desired, while higher concentrations may produce excessive shoot elongation and can interfere with rooting.

Why a Stock Solution Is Recommended

Tissue culture applications require quantities too small to weigh accurately on most standard laboratory balances. Preparing a concentrated stock solution allows GA₃ to be measured accurately using liquid volume rather than fractions of a milligram of dry powder.

Prepare a 1 mg/mL GA₃ Stock Solution

This stock contains approximately 1 mg of active GA₃ per mL, equivalent to 1,000 mg/L active GA₃.

For 100 mL of Stock Solution

  1. Weigh 111 mg (0.111 g) of Boca Hydro GA₃ 90%.
  2. Place the powder in a clean laboratory container.
  3. Add approximately 1–2 mL of 95% ethanol and mix until the GA₃ is dissolved.
  4. Add sterile distilled or deionized water.
  5. Bring to a final total volume of 100 mL.

Because 111 mg of 90% material contains approximately 100 mg active GA₃, the finished 100 mL solution provides approximately 1 mg active GA₃ per mL.

GA₃ Solubility

GA₃ is poorly soluble directly in water. Do not attempt to prepare a concentrated stock solution by simply adding dry GA₃ powder to water.

Recommended Preparation

  1. Measure the required amount of GA₃ powder.
  2. Dissolve it in a small amount of 95% ethanol.
  3. Once completely dissolved, add distilled or deionized water.
  4. Bring the solution to the desired final volume.

An appropriate dilute NaOH solution may also be used to assist dissolution when required by the laboratory protocol.

Do Not Autoclave GA₃ Stock Solution

GA₃ stock solutions intended for sterile tissue culture should be sterilized by filtration and added to the medium after autoclaving and cooling.

  2. Autoclave the medium normally.
  3. Allow the medium to cool to approximately 50 °C or below.
  4. Add the required amount of filter-sterilized GA₃ stock solution.
  5. Mix gently and thoroughly under sterile conditions.
